CHECK MODEM

  1. If your computer will not dial out to your internet provider and you can not hear the MODEM dialing:
  2. Check the telephone cable by hooking a telephone up to the cable going to your MODEM. If you get no dial tone, check the cable and connections.
  3. If then line if OK, check the MODEM as follows:
  4. Click on MY COMPUTER icon
  5. Click on CONTROL PANEL
  6. Click on MODEM
  7. Click on DIAGNOSTICS tab
  8. Highlight the MODEM from the list
  9. Click on MORE INFORMATION
  10. A MORE INFO window will open
  11. If the MODEM is working the blank area of this window will display various AT commands and the response of the MODEM. If the MODEM is not working, this area will be left blank.
  12. Click on OK to return to CONTROL PANEL
  13. Close CONTROL PANEL
  14. If the MODEM does not respond, restart the computer and try again.
  15. If the MODEM still does not respond, you may have a bad MODEM.  MODEMS are susceptible to damage from lightning strikes. You can get a surge protector with protection for telephone lines as well as power.
